Selling in winter works when your home is warm, bright and easy to reach. These six winter home selling tips help Northern Virginia sellers show well in the coldest, darkest months.
1. Keep your home warm and comfortable
You don’t need to run the heat at full blast all day. Set the thermostat to a comfortable level before every showing, so buyers want to stay and look around.
2. Light every room
Winter takes away daylight. Open the curtains and blinds during the day, swap dim bulbs for brighter ones, and turn on lamps and overhead lights before each showing.
3. Clear snow and ice
Shovel and salt the driveway, walkway and steps before showings. Buyers need a safe path to the front door, and a cleared entry shows the home is well cared for.
4. Boost curb appeal in the gray season
Turn on the porch light, tidy the entry, and add a clean doormat and a few evergreen plants. Keep holiday decorations simple and tasteful.
5. Make room for coats and boots
Clear out the entry closet and add a tray for wet shoes, so buyers can see the storage. Put away bulky seasonal items and clutter.
6. Price it right from day one
Fewer homes are usually listed in winter, so yours may face less competition, and buyers who go out in the cold are often serious. Ask your agent how local conditions affect your price before you list.
