Who was Louise Archer?
Louise Reeves Archer was the school’s first principal and one of its first three educators, starting in 1939. In 1939-1940 she taught grades 5 to 7, with 38 students and a salary of $635. She encouraged parents to push for a larger school. She died on April 1, 1948, while visiting relatives in Durham, North Carolina. The school closed early on April 6 so students could attend her funeral, and on April 21 the School Board agreed to rename the school in her memory. Source: the school’s history page.
A short history
The School League’s land on Nutley Street and an adjoining donated acre were deeded to the School Board in 1938. A Public Works Administration grant paid for construction, and the contract was awarded in April 1939. The three-room Vienna Colored School, Vienna’s public school for Black children, opened in September 1939 and was dedicated on October 1, 1939. Families bought a used school bus for children from distant rural communities, and a Christmas musical and a January 1940 luncheon raised money for electricity. The boundary was moved in 1943 to include the East Woodford community. Construction of a masonry addition began in November 1947 and took about a year. Fairfax County’s segregated schools closed at the end of the 1965-66 school year. Source: the school’s history page.
