What “magnet” means here

The school website describes its magnet program as including Responsive Classroom strategies, arts integration, STEAM and project-based learning. Magnet seats work differently from neighborhood attendance. Families outside the school’s boundary can apply, and FCPS handles that process. See the FCPS elementary magnet schools page for current eligibility and deadlines, and ask the school how boundary and magnet seats are handled.

Programs and support

  • Arts integration, STEAM and project-based learning
  • Responsive Classroom, a teaching approach focused on social and academic skills
  • A partnership with George Mason University, per the school’s history page
  • Hunters Woods PTA

A short history

Hunters Woods opened on September 2, 1969, with 19 teachers and 612 students, when only 15 of 33 planned classrooms were ready. O. Stuart Chaplain Jr. was the first principal. It was built as an open school, and a sealed basement found in 1986 became classrooms in 1987-88. A renovation that began around 2001 finished in fall 2003 at $7.7 million, adding 12 classrooms, a black box theater and a new gymnasium. The arts and sciences magnet program began in the 1994-95 school year, when more than 400 parents applied for 110 seats open to students outside the boundary. The school’s history page says the mustang mascot reflects the equestrian theme of the Hunters Woods Village Center. Source: the school’s history page.

Which homes go to Hunters Woods? Check by address

Living near a school does not mean a home is assigned to it. Assignments follow FCPS attendance boundaries, not ZIP codes, street names or distance, and boundaries can change. Magnet admission is separate from boundary assignment. Before you make an offer, enter the exact address in the FCPS Boundary Locator. We can run it with you.
